It was getting late, so we decided to make no more stops, but just ride straight through to Keystone. But we had one more unexpected adventure along the way. We didn't get off the freeway in time to avoid an upcoming thunder storm which turned out to be a very severe wind and hail storm. All we could do was get off to the side of the freeway and throw a tarp over ourselves while we waited for the rain and hail to stop. Very frightening experience, but the Lord was faithful to protect us. After it passed, we rode to the next exit to dry out. There at the local diner, we saw some of the damage that the storm had done: a half dozen cars with broken windshields, the wind had blown over a semi-truck and bent over a freeway exit sign. Some of the hail on the ground was 2-3 inches in diameter (the size of a large egg).
Completely soaked, we still had a couple hundred miles to ride, and a 20-30 mile side-wind did not help. We arrived in Keystone at 10:00 completely exhausted.
Today, July 24, we awakened to bright blue skies. Had a late breakfast while we recovered from yesterday's ordeal. We spent most of the day touring Mt Rushmore and Crazy Horse Memorial.
Left Crazy Horse at 4pm. Good weather and beautiful ride into Douglas Wyoming. Rode through Buffalo National Grasslands Area. Saw about a dozen antelope along the road. Tomorrow, we head for DuBois, Wyoming, where we hear they are celebrating National Western Cowboy Days!
